Because there are copyright issues involved and we don't want our beloved iPodLounge shut down because they were violated. :)

Uh, no. We did not. We are not interested in a lawsuit from Apple.

We've never posted iPod v2.0 firmware. You must be thinking of either an individual user or another site.

I feel like the copyright police today. :p

I also feel that the mods need a hand here as ya'll are expecting something from the ipodlounge.com that just shouldn't happen. ;)

iPod Firmware (regardless of version at this point) is copyrighted material. It is technically illegal to distribute the firmware via a web site, E-Mail, Private Messages (PM's), or whatever without Apple's explicit written permission. The chances of litigation to a high profile web site like iPodlounge.com are high.

Beyond that bandwidth ain't cheap. Firmware file downloads would cost quite a few bucks to the iPodlounger. It's not his place to be footing that bill. That's unreasonable to expect that of him or anyone else that runs this site.

So, here's what I suggest...

If you've got an old iPod you can get the latest firmware from Apple's web site. (1.3 for Mac's or 1.2.6 for Windows).

If you've got a new iPod then the 2.0 firmware is on your CD-ROM. Until Apple makes this (or a newer version) available through their web site that's where you'll find it. If you lost your CD, borrow a friends or call Apple.

The copyright issues are different. With Firmware < 2.0, Apple posted those to the web, and linked to them from various sites (like VersionTracker), and allowed people to post archived versions of the firmware to .Mac accounts, which is where you downloaded it from - an iPodlounge user's .Mac account homepage.

But with 2.0, Apple has not released it to the web, and given that, we cannot either. And AMG is correct; if you own a 2.0 iPod, your CD will have come with the updater, and if you don't, the software will do you no good, (it's not compatible with Classic iPods) and what you need is available on Apple's page.

(I've just said AMG is right twice now! Is this the bizarro world?! :p )

Sorry, I'm not impressed. When you say both AMG and Jacko are right within the same calendar day, (None of this "Tiger Slam" stuff where you say they are right within the same 24 hours, but different calendar days; sorry my friend, THAT wouldn't count), then that will be an official "bizarro" day.:D

Jacko has only been right once (maybe twice). Sorry Eustaces, yer just wrong! :p :p :p :p ;)

I just noticed the iPod Around the World Gallery was closed due to bandwidth issues. This saddens me as it really was an innovative and very cool concept that was really well done. Argh. If I had bandwidth/web space to donate to the cause I would in a heartbeat.

Hey, I'm only such a jerk because I like this place.

I have just got my first iPod.. the 30gb one. I intended to use it to replace every other format and player i have as I am fed up with CDs, tapes, vinyl and minidisks.. far too many formats for comfort.

So I was going to use my iPod for:
*personal stereo
*to drive my home hifi (via aux in)
*to drive my car stereo (via aux in)
*to drive my computer at work

However my iPod line out (from the base unit) does not have a suffciently high enough output to drive my hifi or car stereo (either of them) correctly. I have to turn up the main volume on both these units quite a bit higher than for any other unit (i.e. CD) that I plug into them.
Consequently the sound is a little thin and weedy (as you would expect). This is espcially true of MP3s that have gone through the volume reducing process with MP3Gain (at 89 db).

I should mention that sound quality is very important to me.. another reason I bought the iPod was that the sound quality was supposed to be very good... actually it is only OK... it does not handle low bass very well at all, but that's another gripe).. my car stereos and home hi-fi are both of quite high quality.

Through reading these excellent forums (many thanks to the guys who have set then up) I have discovered that the volume is reduced for the European versions of the iPods.. (all for the b*** French, can you believe it!). So I have two questions:

1) Does this volume restriction apply to the line out as well as the headphone out?

2) Assuming I can find an American iPod owner who will email me the firmware for the new iPod (is the software the same for all the models, 10, 20 and 30?) then how can I install it over my existing European version? Do I just execute it in my PC (oh, yes, I forgot to mention, I am a Windows user).

Assuming that the answer to the previous two points is yes.. can some kindly US iPod owner get in touch?
ModelCitizen at Brighton dot co dot uk or PM.

Thanks a lot.
