Earphones for the Buck
Hey, whats up. My first post, ordered my 30GB ipod, coming in a week or so. Figured it was time to make sure i make this experience as enjoyable as i can with all the money ive dished out in to it (16 years old, no job, lots of saving up .. :D ) . Anyways.. I've spent every last buck I have on my ipod, even tho my birthday is coming up, I dont want to spend an overwhelming amount on earphones, but i've read from every corner of the internet that the ipod phones suck. I've spent the last 2 hours reading the forumabout in-ear earphones. I want in-ear earphones so i can stick them in my pocket, my ipod is pocketsized ready to go, so why shouldnt my earphones, i dont want to be limited. SO here's the question :
What does the ipod community recommend that I buy for a cheaper price. I'm not expecting the best quality of course, but im not exactly fluid with the money.. My genre's of music are Rock and Punk Rock (green day, etc...), if that helps. My price range is probably around 50-60 US, i know that isnt much to work with, but considering i've been using no-name brand headphones and a bulky 10 second anti-shock cd player, this is a huge upgrade for music. I almost went w/ the Zen NX , but i decided to give the smallness a try with portability one of my main issues, tho i hear some people ditch the ipod completly for the zen nx or the sony md . THanks for the help, this is my first post, woot! =) ..

Ditch the iPod for a Zen? Zen Who? ;-)
Well...have fun with your new iPod.
with 50-60 US, get a pair of Sennheiser PX200's ($60).
# 2 Re: Earphones for the Buck
I was hoping for something a bit more portable... So they can fit in my pocket with my ipod, such as some earphones
# 3 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Sony E888s are the best you can get within (or almost within) your price band.
# 4 Re: Earphones for the Buck
If you are willing to spend $60.00 on the Sony's, I would try and save $20.00 more and get a pair of Shure E2's for $80.00. They are a considerable upgrade, are isolating, and make great rock phones. In that price range they can't be beat for in ear cans.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. I guess now it comes to how much birthday money I have, i have to leave some for an ipod case as well, so, im hoping to get 110 + US easy from all my realtives combined, that shouldnt be a problem. So I'll probably lean toward the e2, since they seem to be worshipped on these forums. I wonder where I'll buy them from, i live in Canada, we do have a best buy. Ill have to shop around. Thanks again
Chad
# 6 Re: Earphones for the Buck
You're not going to find the e2's at a best buy. Pretty much everything best buy carries in terms of headphones/earphones is crap... at least where I live.
# 7 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Hit Grandma up for an extra $20.00. :D It's for a worthy cause.
You can buy the E2's here, and I thinkl they ship to Canada.

# 8 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Hmmm.. Canada has really bad terriff's and crap like that. I bought my ipod from ebay and its being shipped from the states, the agony of large purchases + taxes + terriffs = almost not worth the saved amount of money. Maybe for something smaller, the tax wont be so bad, but if I can find a local store that carriest it, or a store that's at least within Canada, then i won't have to go thru the same #### as before. LoL, Grandma, what's that over there a bird?! * sneaks a 20 out of her purse * j/k. I wouldn't steal and I'm pretty sure i'll be able to afford them. I just didn't want to go overboard on these earphones, but i guess my defintion of overboard is just a decent pair of earphones to the rest of you, so I guess it's just me and my cheapness when it comes to buying stuff. Any suggestions of which kind of stores ill look at in the yellow pages, for these type of headphones if best buy doesnt have em.
# 9 Re: Earphones for the Buck
I feel your pain. Money's hard to come by. Do you have Guitar Centers in Canada? They carry the Shure's. Or do a google search for the Shure site, and get a list of their dealers in Canada.

# 10 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Yes we do have guitar stores, do you mean guitar center like a chain of guitar stores, or just a guitar store in general? lol, i dont play any instrument, but my friend is heavy in to guitars and he could point me at a couple, if oyu mean just guitar stores in general. Ill head to the shure site. Thanks for the help, and a soon-to-be (once it arrives), ipod user. You wouldnt believe how much i hate mac, and was dissing my friend for liking em, but im sorta ... changed with the ipod now ... lets just say i respect mac users now =) . Especially since it has Unix, which is much more stable than any windows system.
# 11 Re: Earphones for the Buck
I mean the "Guitar Center" chain. That's the name of the chain. Other guitar stores might carry them too. You will love your pod. I promise.

# 12 Re: Earphones for the Buck
i've already downloaded all the software. Mp3gain, eupod, and ephpod, im pyched. Noope, i thin guitar center is only a US store. I actually used to live in Medford Oregon, last year... They have one there, if worst comes to worst i can have them mail me a pair and i give them the money, but i hate waiting such a long time for a product especially from ebay, or something, have the person inbetween to pick up the product then send it to me, is such a hassel.
# 13 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Good Luck. Don't get impatient. You'll get there. :)

# 14 Re: Earphones for the Buck
hehe. So i guess im on a hunt for e2 or e2c earphones . Population of my city is almost 1,000,000 , so im sure a music store somewhere has to have it. Which do i want, e2 or e2c?
# 15 Re: Earphones for the Buck
They are exactly the same, just different packaging. Don't stay out too late, and they don't sell them in bars. :D

# 16 Re: Earphones for the Buck
lol. lucky for me, i can drink , legally, when i turn 18, not that 21 bs the states have. Thats just crazy, if your old enough to die in the military for your country, and all that stuff, and you can have a child, live on your own, be the CEO of a multi-million dollar company (which is unlikly), you should be able to drink. But thats just politics and this thread if for earphones, so why am i still typing?
# 17 Re: Earphones for the Buck
If you're really concerned about budget, you might consider the Sennheiser MX400 or MX500, for under $20 U.S.
# 18 Re: Earphones for the Buck
The E888s are better than the Shures in some key respects, before you write them off. My wife prefers the E2s, and I nearly bought another pair, second hand, just so she had a back up. But even she acknowledges that the E888s sound better, though they're too big to stay in her tiny ears.
I'm betting that most of those who rave about the E2 haven't actually tried the 888...
# 19 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Ummm... So these sony ones are better than the E2 shures? Im sure I can afford the 60+ US, i just thought i could get a kick ### cheap pair. But this is going to have to last me awhile, so I might as well get a good pair, and a good case to protect it, so it will last me and be worth it. So E888 vs E2's ... ? Other people agree/disgree with this?
# 20 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Actually i would just try the original buds first...
If your upgrading from cheep horrbile stock earbuds, the apple buds are actually not that bad.
Sure they have some issues but i would see how you go with them first of all.
just my opinion!
# 21 Re: Earphones for the Buck
I've done a bit of research myself and after trawling through plenty reviews it seems that Sony MDR-EX71SL don't seem such a bad deal.
They go for between $45 & $50 as far as I can tell. I am looking for a pair myself and came across something which may interest you. You can pick up a pair for a bargain at ecost but unfortunately they only have em in black. May be worth your while though as you are from Canada and as I understand there is a lot of taxes and such but ecost seem to have a "borderfree" thing going to save you that.
# 22 Re: Earphones for the Buck
EX71s are simply horrible, MacMaiden. Save your ?s!
# 23 Re: Earphones for the Buck
The EX71's are like listening to your stereo in the next room with the door closed. If you want to buy from eCost, check out the Senn PX100 or PX200. They carry them and they are worlds better, for less money. BTW, eCost has fantastic service.

# 24 Re: Earphones for the Buck
hi, I just got my new 10GB 3G iPod too and I'm still getting used
to the original Apple earbuds.I personally think they sound pretty
good compared to the typical cheap earbuds that they give you
with Sony MD plyers and such.
One thing that bothers me is that kicking bass makes the
earbuds' sound distorted. With the EQ set to 'off' the distortion is
not that obvious, but if I use any of the settings that emphasizes
bass it's easy to hear the bass distortion. I tried listening to the
iPod with Sony MDR V-700s and the distortion was gone.
Does the volume restriction somehow limit the output volume so
that the output voltage is clipping?
I tried Shure E1's at a music store this morning and wasn't that
impressed with the sound quality. Okay they're better but the
complexity of using them overrides that IMHO.

# 25 Re: Earphones for the Buck
Hey Chad, just wondering if you found what you were looking for? (from Edmonton too). FYI, you can buy the Shure E2's from Ax music (by skyreach center) for $130 or... do what I did today and go to radioshack and buy the Sennheiser MX400's for 25 bucks. They work great and you could afford two pairs.. you'll actually find people comparing them with the E2's for a fraction of the price.
Anyways, you prolly have some already.. just stumbled upon your post.

# 26 Re: Earphones for the Buck
actually Bugs, i just got my iSkin today, and so i was planning on buying earphones next. Thanks, i'll get my dad to drive me in to edmonton asap (im techincially from leduc, but people know where edmonton is). Thanks , yah i'll probably get the mx400. Most radio shak's carry em?
# 27 Re: Earphones for the Buck
I'm on the far south side Chad.. actually my wife is from Leduc (even working there this evening). I bought the Sennheisers from the Radioshack at South Edmonton Common so that's close enough for you. Just don't ask anyone for help, they're all a bunch of idiots ;) The earphones are on the bottom row among all the rest. Good luck and enjoy. I'm gonna go back and buy the silicone covers for the earphones too.. (they're only a couple of bucks) so maybe you'll want to pick some up at the same time to try also.
