Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I just wanted to see what the community thought about Sony's MDR-V700, MDR-V600, and the MDR-V500 headphones.
I've been considering one of these three, and really can't decide.
My biggest reasons are they seem comfortable and I like the style and looks of all three (the MDR-V700 the best though).
Not too much of a fan of the earphones, although I may get a pair in the future for the portability and keep'em in my backpack. Might also get a pair of behind the neck headphones for when I go to the gym. But for the most part I'm looking for something to use as my main set of cans.
Does anyone own one of these or have any opinions?
Thanks :D

The headphone snobs are going to say they're not as good for the price as other phones.
I think those particular phones are designed for DJ'ing so they emphasis more on the low end and have bad midrange/highs.
If you're set on them, go for it cause the V700's do look nice.
If you're more interested in sound quality then there are alternatives that are cheaper :
Grado SR-60
Sennheiser HD280
Sony MDR-V6 ;)
Are you going to be using the phones for portable use?
# 2 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
cool, thanks for the suggestions.
I mean i've been viewing these forums and other headphone forums for the past month or so to see what I should get...still haven't been able to decide, but I'm really set on one of those three from Sony :)
Uhm, I'd like for them to be somewhat portable...probalby putting them in my backpack.
But like I said earlier, I'll probably eventually get a set of earphones (for portability), and a set of behind the neck (for gym/running)
But I do want somethin right now to use as my main cans, and would like for them to be somewhat portable :)
# 3 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I just came across these as well..
Check this out!
A set from panasonic (http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId=11251&catalogId=11005&itemId=61965&catGroupId=11145&modelNo=RP-HG20&surfModel=RP-HG20)
anyone have any thoughts on this?
ahh..but they don't even fold :(
# 4 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Out of the phones that mktversion listed, I prefer the V700 because it's the easiest to listen to. The HD280 is ugly as sin, accurate but boring. The V6 is accurate and tight - and folds smaller than the V700 - but definitely not easy to listen to. And the Grado sounds fine but is open so provides no isolation during travel.
# 5 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I own both the 700 and the 600. Both are good, but for long listens you should go for the 600. The 700 is more for DJ/studio applications, and they will be uncomfortable if left on for long periods of time.
# 6 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
cool, so it seems the 700 and the 600 are gonna be my best bets.
Which of the two do you guys think is more portable.
And as far as comfortability goes, the most I would *probably* wear these is 1-2 hrs at the most.
And as far as the price goes, it seems that I can get the 600 for about $80 and the 700 for $90, so not a big price difference if u ask me :)
# 7 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Neither of them are really portable, although they can fold up. The 700 comes with a little bag that you can put them in, but these aren't going to fit easily into a bag, or they'll take up a lotta space in a backpack. You gotta remember, these are primarily studio/DJ headphones. If you wear the 700 walking around, it WILL stand out, not so much with the 600.
The 700s will feel pretty uncomfortable after about 20-30 minutes. DJs constantly take the headphones off so Sony made it with this in mind. It will be VERY uncomfortable and you will be moving it around after every couple minutes or so. I've gotten used to them now and they're kinda broken in, but for long casual listening I'd go with the 600 (or if you wanna spend the extra dough, the 900) instead. I only use the 700 when I DJ or when I'm attempting to produce. :)
I know the 700 is tempting because it looks so spiffy, and it is true that you can break them in after some time. Just be prepared for your ears to get smooshed. If you're thinking about getting into DJing, then the 700 will workout the best. If you want to listen casually, I say go for the 600.
Hope this was helpful to you. This is all just my opinion of course. I'm not too much into headphones, but I do have these cans and I hope one or the other works out for ya. :)
# 8 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
While I do agree about the V700 being easy to listen to, I think I would recommend the MDR-V6 (as pointed out before, not the V600) to you. If you don't like them they are easy to sell on forums like Head-Fi with minimal loss, especially to overseas buyers.
I consider the V6 one of the headphones that every owner of a good portable device should have, just to let them see what the beginning of true headphone fidelity is like. Then perhaps if you're curious about the V700, you can return to them.
# 9 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I've had a lot of people suggest the MDR-V6 over the V600, they just said it's a lil harder to find. So I might hafta take a look into them.
How about one of the lower models like the MDR-V500 or MDR-V300? They seem they would be a lil more portable...although everyone's been bashing on the v500.
Potemouth - is it true that the MDR-v700DJ has too much bass? How does it sound with the iPod?
# 10 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Visit www.Head-Fi.org for advice on good places to get the V6. There's always a supply to be found somewhere.
The V500 is in my opinion the definition of Crap with a capital C.
# 11 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
thanks for that link...I've been visiting them the past month searching through their endless threads. They definitely know what they're talking about :)
I'm gonna also try to stop by a store sometime this week and try on a couple different headphones.
# 12 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
IronSerif - IMO, the 700s don't have too much bass. The bass is actually kinda low, even with some fat Dre beats. This is primarily for beat-matching purposes I believe. I hear the in-ear phones produce deeper bass response. Overall though, the 700s can be pretty loud, yet very clear.
It sounds ok with the iPod, although I havent really listened to my iPod using the Sonys. Just be warned, you're not gonna want to walk around with the 700s. The cord will most likely get in the way. I don't want to deter you from getting the 700s of course, because I really do enjoy these headphones, but I would not recommend them for casual listening. If there's a GuitarCenter or SamAsh around you I'd say go and check out the phones there and ask the employees for their opinion. Good luck and let us know what you end up getting. :)
# 13 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Cool thanks for the input!
I have a guitar center like half an hour away, I'll try to head over there and see what they have and hear their opinions.
Maybe I'll end up getting two sets of cans. The first set being the MDR-v700DJ or something around it's caliber/style. And the second being something portable that I can use walking around...maybe a set of earphones or behind the neck ones.
Time to start looking into those EX71's or those Sure E2C's or whatever :)
Since about 80% of the time I'm mobile, one of these choices would be better?
# 14 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
You can get the V6's from www.etronics.com, and the general consensus over at head-fi is that they're the class of the Sonys, and reasonably portable.
If you want canal phones, go with the Shure's over the EX71's EVERY TIME.
# 15 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
doin a wireless post up at school, can't stay long.
But a buddy of mine just recommened the Technics 1200A, he said those are pretty good.
How hard is it to keep the canal phones clean?
# 16 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I've had a pair of 700's for like 3 years now, and I love them :) I used them for DJ/studio stuff for a couple years and now they're just my portable phones.. agreed, they do stand out, but I don't mind drawing a bit of attention to myself ;)
As far as portablility and comfort, I've found them very comfortable, and once I get them on and in the right place they fit very snugly, especially over a ballcap.
The cord is definitely long, which I found to be indispensible if you hook them up to some decks (leaning over for records was never easier) -- when I blade or walk with them I just have my CD player (no I don't have an ipod) in my backpack or my hoody front pocket, and tuck the rest of the cord in wherever the CD player is, you get the perfect amount of cord and it looks pretty hi-tek.
They're someone broken now from years of abuse and letting idiots play with them, but I would buy another pair again if they broke permanently.

# 17 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Nice, thanks for the thoughts...and welcome to iPodlounge :)
I'm tryin to talk "certain people" into buying me a set of these for Christmas...so we'll see lol
# 18 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I've bought the V700's last weekend and I quite agree with what is said above. If you want to use them with ipod you'll find that the cord gets in your way, you have to shove it in your pocket in order to get the desired length.
These are closed type phones, during summer you will have a hard time wearing it outside, they'll make your ears sweat like hell, even now in October I feel a little hot with them on.
The sound is very good, not very heavy bass, but they are very-very loud. I am not yet shure, but I think they also draw more power from ipod's battery than the stock earbuds (they should, using 50 mm neodymium magnets...)
They fit very snuggly on your ears and you'll find them hard to wear for more than an hour because the ear applied pression is a little too much.
To conclude, these are very good for home. Not very portable, and definitely not wearable during summer.

i also own the v700dj phones and i love them. this christmas it will be 3 years i have had them. for home use, when you want EXCEPTIONAL sound, get these.
i cant see myself doing anything other than sitting down with these though, as they are big and heavy on your head, and i can imagine they'd not stay put so well, but then again i have never tried it. they do get a tad uncomfortable after a long time, as it seems they squeeze onto your head. but boy howdy, the sound is quite impressive.
# 21 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I agree with the weight. I have a pair of 900s and while the sound is exceptional, the weight can get to you.
# 22 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
I would call the V700DJ many things. Heavy, uncomfortable, hot, bulky even when folded, "comfortable" sounding without a high degree of precision, fair sonic bang for the buck for money given it's intended use... but never in a million years 'exceptional'. The same goes for the MDR-7509 (except I'd upgrade the comfort to good and downgrade the sonic bang for the buck to poor, given the price), which I've been lead to believe is quite similar to the MDR-V900.
I think the V700 is a viable option with the iPod, especially if you want the DJ look (but isn't that past the zeitgeist?). Because of it's relatively loose, uncontrolled bass and it's ability to fudge high frequencies, it works against the iPod's sonic nature to 'de-flatten' the way the iPod can sound with low impedance phones.
Personally, I'd stay happy with the cheaper (more strident, but at the same time more precise) and smaller / more portable MDR-V6 or spend more on the Sennheiser HD25-1 and be done with it... it's a far better phone for portable use than even the price difference would suggest.
Although there's not that much you can do to get around the problems of a 'slow' driver like the V700 has, I've substituted a much smaller hole at the back of the driver and removed the felt pads in front for a slightly more controlled sound.
# 23 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
i have the 700s and i love them. i wore them for 8 straight hours on a flight to alaska and they felt fine i wear em around campus down around my neck with the volume up and theyre like portable stereo speakers. worth every penny.
# 24 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
STOP STOP STOP
GET THE V6 OVER ALL OF THOSE
the V700 are perhaps the most uncomfortable headphones PERIOD
the v6/ 7506 are the best headphones by sony in that price range

Yet another thread brought back from the dead.
# 26 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
that's right, V6 is a very good choice
i actually sold my 700 for V6
# 27 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Hey there,
There was some guy who said to get the MDR-V6/7506
This is wrong. The V6 is a cool-looking but crap phone.
He meant to say MDR-V600/7506. The MDR-V600 and MDR-7506 studio monitor headphones are supposed to have identical cups(same sound) or be the same phone, I can't remember which.
But anyways the consensus on head-fi is that out of the relatively low price MDR-VXXX DJ/studio phones(300,500, 600, 700,etc. ), the V600 is the one you want.

You got it all wrong, MDR-V6 = MDR-7506 with minor differences, not the MDR-V600. MDR-V600 is craptacular. I own MDR-V600, MDR-V700, MDR-V6, MDR-7506 so I know.
# 29 Re: Thoughts on Sony MDR-v700, 600, 500
Ack. yeah my bad. I just bought these phones yesterday actually haha.
Those numbers are really easy to mess up.
Yeah the headphonereviews.com site lists them as V6/7506's
