No alternative buds work for me

I was fairly happy with the original Apple buds except they did not block out much background noise.

However i bought Sony XL71 & Shure E2c and now Etys. I have found each one to give me too little bass and too strong treble. For example i get much more base out of my Grado 80s. I have tried moistening the buds as recommended. I wonder if it is just something about my ear canals (maybe too long) which stop in-the-ear buds from working properly. On balance i get best sound (and no screeching treble) out of my Apple buds.

They won't give you better isolation, but my favorite bud-style phones (not in-canal phones) are the Sennheiser MX400 or MX500. Under $20, too, check 'em out.

Which ety's did you guys get? The low-impedance ones are key, otherwise you'll get poor sound. Visit headphone.com for good info on the various incarnations of the ety buds. Speficially, you probably want the ER-4P (the low impedance one). This gets around needing an amp. Again, headphone.com has lots of really good information about these topics. I recommend it.

The thing here is that the ER-4P work great with other devices I have ( portable cd player, hi-fi system.......) but with the ipod.......

I love my ipod, but I feel it doesn't deliver the sound quality a 300 bucks device should......

That's why I'd like to know brands of earbuds well driven by ipod...

Screechy treble is in my experience a more or less surefire sign that they aren't going far enough into your ears.

I get decent bass out of E1 but I wouldn' mistake it for the RS-1. The guy I spoke to said I should consider the E5 for good bass. Any E5 + Grado owners willing to confirm that? The SR-80 is supposed to have nearly as good a bass as the RS-1 so on balance I don't think there's any substitute for large drivers for moving lots of air.

I got this email response from Eytmotic:

"Please be advised that some of the earphones and/or earmuffs have larger diameter speakers than the ER-4. Bigger speakers are capable of higher outputs at lower frequencies. The ER-4 earphones, by design, have a flatter frequency response. That means without adding extra bass by using an equalizer or bass boost, the ER-4 may sound like it has less bass than other earphones. The other thing that is very important is the issue of sealing the ER-4 in the ear. It must seal in the canal like an earplug or the bass frequency response will be diminished. With some earphones, you can get away with not having a good seal and your earphones will sound o.k.; e.g. Grado 80 and your iPod earphones.

The ER-4P is capable of outputting more than 100 dB SPL at low frequencies, the other earphones are capable of greater low frequency output because the speakers are larger. The ER-4P has a flatter low frequency response compared to the other earphones mentioned. Doing a side-by-side comparison of all the earphones would result in the ER-4P sounding like it has less bass than the others. Extra bass can be added by adjusting the equalization or adding bass boost.

Lastly, based on the shape of one's ear, one may want to consider a musician's custom earmold for comfort and seal to replace the "standard" foamies and white flanged eartips. "

Of course the only way to deal with this is side-by-side comparison. But since there are few local shops that carry this type of stuff, even in big cities, we're stuck with the web. head-fi.com is good, but you have to take these folks at their word, which is sometimes difficult.

I like ety's idea of the custom mold. That sounds pretty sweet.

Does anyone know of any LA area stores that stock high-end headphones? I'd really like to side by side the ety ER-4P, ER-4s and the ER-6 through an unamplified pod. If you can tell me a place, I'll do the footwork and report my findings.

Cool.

I'll first be trying to experiment changing the ipod EQs for the Etys.

Anyone know where custom moulds can be obtained in the UK if i want to go down that route ?

I believe Westone Labs (800-525-5071) www.westone.com will help you.

Penbat,
You will probably have to go to an Audiologist to have custom moulds made. It involves pouring wax into your ear to produce the mould, so not the sort of thing to risk in a back street hi-fi shop!

Thanks guys I am looking into your suggestions.

Anyone know of any specific place that has experience of doing custom moulds in the UK.

Thanks

I believe that any ear health care provider will have the facilities and experience to create a mold for you. They do this for hearing aids all the time, it is not terribly difficult.

Occassionaly these molds are not made with wax, but rather lube and putty, which requires less skill.

I can't give you any UK specific information, but likely your local ear doctor can make a mold, or will refer you to a nearby lab that can do it.

I think the Sennheisers are very good. A pair of MX300s came with my iRiver 256 MB player, which make it a
very nice combination. Now, I bought a pair of MX500s for use with my iPod.

After some experimenting... I'm quite happy with the following setup:
- level all my MP3's at 92dB (using MP3Gain)
- increase the volume by 100% (using xPlay, iTunes, or one of the freeware utilities that pop up)
- set EQ to "Bass booster"
- use Sennheiser's MX500 (very good performance on the entire frequency spectrum)

This gives distortion-free sound with enough 'bass'. At a volume level that is loud enough for normal use.
It might even be loud enough for use on a noisy commuter train (haven't tried yet).

If you're satisfied with the EQ 'off' then you might even level your MP3 at 93,5 or 95 dB.
Since at that level, an EQ-setting with bass-boost (Electronic, Hip-hop, R&B, Rock and the like) will likely introduce
some distortion.

Hope this helps,
mage

Thanks for that. It seems to me like it is a 2 stage process. Westone in the US have told me that i can get an impression of my ears from any suitable UK medical professional and i could then ship these impressions to them to produce a mould which would specifically fit an Er-4p. I can't see a normal UK medical audiologist doing this unless they specialise in fitting for particular models of earphone. Westone would charge me $150 plus shipping for converting an impression to a mould !!
