BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
How about BT + iPod ?? Simple, a little BT transmitter is plugged into the top of the iPod and the BT earphones/headset gets the signal.
I'm quite sure this is possible, but dunno if we will ever see it!
Come on Griffin vs. Belkin, lets see who has the brains!!

i think sound quality and power would become big issues with this. i have seen headsets for cell phones, but the quality is pretty poor.

Bluetooth chipsets drain alot more power than a comparable infrared or RF (radio frequency) device.
I have a bluetooth mobile headset and the sounds is fairly average. However, they are now using DSP technolgy and this is supposed to improve the clarity.

Once you make something wireless, it's not just the transmit/receive bits that need the battery. The thing that makes the noises also needs power...
The only way you're going to get acceptable sound from a BT earphone in real life is to transmit compressed audio, i.e. the MP3 file itself. That means the phones must decode the MP3 file, amp the earphone part and power the BT chipset too. If you're going to do that for say as long as the iPod's endurance (8 hours), that's not going to be a miniscule battery. The BT chipset will be the least of the power drain.

So we are talking about BIG battery for the ear phones eh? ouch!

Fairly big. Not necessarly that heavy but you aren't going to end up with earphones. More like enlarged Street Styles. Transmitting MP3 files directly could be a problem due to differing bitrates, and the fact that 256K MP3 or more will cause a problem... What you may need to do for reliable operation is to have the "base station" which plugs into the iPod take the analog signal from the line-out and re-encode it as an AAC file maybe at relatively low bitrates which can be transmitted reliably over BT. That'll introduce more degredation (on-the-fly lossy encoding of an analog signal that was itself reproduced from a lossy audio format isn't looking too good a concept).
And however you look at it, it's gonna be expensive. How expensive? Like almost as much as a base iPod expensive. You've got most people here thinking the Sony EX earphones are hi-fi  How many will drop $300 on a very short range wireless phone which sounds nowhere near as good as an Ety or even the relatively crap MDR-7506?

Why dont you get a iTrip, then get one of those old headphones with built in fm tuner.
# 7 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
so what you're all saying is that there is no viable way to do this? I like the itrip idea. But how big are the phones. Aren't those the big ones that ciompletely cover your ears and wrap around your head 5 times?
# 8 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
Good idea , i doubt it would work though.

There is a company who are making earpieces for hearing aids that work via bluetooth.. They were small and light and powered.. i can't remember where i saw the article.. i think it was wired or gizmodo.. I think they said they were about $5000 though :(

There is a way to do it. But there are just some issues that need to be worked out first. I would personally like to see BT built in, but apple is already having enough battery troubles let alone adding something more draining to the list. This would also be nice for simply synchronizing contacts and calendar items without a wire.
It is a good idea, just needs some time for development.
# 11 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
i would pay an enormous amount of money for wireless ear buds or even headphones.
# 12 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
I'd rather have a cord and high sound quality than no cord and low sound quality.
Making headphones more convienient isn't worth sacrificing sound quality.
# 13 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
how about blue tooth earphones/earbuds and a remote that would be too kool!!!
# 14 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
When I think about it, I think it is a bad idea. Think about how easy it would be to lose a pair of wireless earbuds:(

Wireless earbuds would look pretty weird.

# 16 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
it would not be that easy to lose them if they had some kind of little hook that hooked over your ears...
# 17 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
the quality is good high bandwith transfer rate on bluetooth
# 18 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
Wireless earbuds...
connect by a cord round your neck to prevent losing them
D'oh, I may as well just use wired phones...

# 19 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
bluetooth headphones would be way to expensive and horrible sound quality and ruin the battery life of the ipod and would require big batteries on the headphones
# 20 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
If it works, SWEET!!!!
I'm thinking tiny earbuds (nearly invisible) like a hearing aid. That would be off the hiz-ook!!!
# 21 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
i have a bluetooth earpiece for my cell phone and the quality is good, but nothing that i would want to hear if i was listening to music. also, the biggest problem is the battery, regardless of size or shape. think about how aggravated you would be if you went out of the house forgetting to charge your earphones while your iPod is full and ready to go. b/c battery life is basically independent you would always have to remember to charge both devices at the same time all the time. and i don't know about everybody else, but i don't think i can always remember to do that. at this point, wired earphones are best.
# 22 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
I'm going to try the iTrip idea. Any leads on some tiny ear bud radios?

# 23 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
no no, there isn't a battery, it powers it self like those flashlights you shake for 30 seconds and then it works

# 24 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
These will not be tiny, invisible earbuds. They will have electronics and battery-- I will be surprised if they are smaller than a pair of Sony Eggo cans.

# 25 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
Wireless headphone are available for purchase, they just aren't the most portable and it would be next to impossible to make them portable. Also, I doubt you could use them on an airplane without large hassle.
I mean really, did any of you even try google?

how about the hp headphone, have you ever checked? and the wireless remote control by TEN?

# 27 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
I have the logitech bluetooth headphones that just came out for the ipod and the sound quality is unbeleivable. Way better than the sony headphones that i was using beforehand. And as far as battery goes, it comes with a charge wire that splits and charges both the headphones and the blutooth piece that attaches to the ipod. The best part is that you can control the music from the headphones without touching your ipod! :-)
# 28 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
I have a friend who is half deaf that has a government bought (take that!) wireless hearing aid that he uses with his ipod mini. Apparently the sound (to him, which I dont know about seeing as he's half deaf) is better than most headphones he uses. But it's something like a $4000 system.

High bandwidth transfer rate does not necessarily equal good sound quality.
# 30 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
well, that's sound nice. but I don't want to get little heavy headphone because bluetooth one needs battery. it will be drained very faster. it's like bluetooth mouse, keyboard.
# 31 Re: BlueTooth Earphones for iPOD!
I bluetooth phones are very light and have a rechargeable battery. They are said to be able to last 8 hours, and I use them at work.
Because they have power save mode, then I pause to get up from my desk or whatever, they auto sleep. I have used them for a full 12 hour shift with no problems what so ever.
