Suoer CD/DVD Audio
Does anyone know anything about these new music formats? Are they a lot better than regular CD's and if so, if you could compress their files, would they sound better than a regular CD? Or do they even allow compression? Thanks for any input.

i remember reading that dvd audio is superior to cd quality and really utilises 5.1 surround sound. that?s why some concert dvd?s are spectacular!

DVD and super audio CD are both based on the DVD format (I think) but the room on a Super Audio CD is dedicated ENTIRELY to audio data, while DVD-Audio leaves room for extras like video and things like that. I suspect that DVD-Audio will proabably win out becasue DVD's are already being widely produced and since the Super Audio CD format is a SOny licensed thing, the licensing for DVD is probably cheaper. Not to mention the possibility of burning SACD's. However, you should know that both of these are or probably will be copy protected. Thankfully, you'll be able to download high quality AAC's from Apple which also provides for 5.1 surround and is probably perfect for burning DVD-a's in the future.

Last time I checked, very few artists are publishing their work to consumers on DVD discs... Since most people are not able to detect the subtle differences between a cd audio disc and a dvd audio disc...right?

Destined_wind, DVD-A and SACD probably aren't practical for the typical consumerm however, they sound much better to someone with a high end 5.1 surround sound system. As DVD's replace VHS and HDTV and Digital TV become standard, surround sound systems will be in higher demand and prices should drop. At this point, DVD-A's and SACD's will probably become more popular.
