Hi all,

I have been posting on this site in the forums for the last week or so to find out as much about my ipod as possible.

As I have written elsewhere, my girlfriend bought me my ipod a few weeks ago when we were on holiday in the states. When we returned to Hong Kong it was placed on the book case as some form of ipod torture for me. You see, she said I have to wait for my birthday (7th August) until I got it....what a bind.

Anyway, I decided that I would spend the time finding sites about the ipod and came across this one. I love the design and layout...exactly the same style as the ipod itself. I started reading the forums and posted some questions about whether MM was that bad and also how to best rip my CD's.

Answers came flooding in, mostly from a guy called Bill Mcnair (Southside Irish)(who I am very much indebted) and a few others including Adam. This resulted in me getting CDex to rip my cd's and it produced fantastic results at 160kbps. I also downloaded ID3 tagit as recommended by southside and this helped me retag some of the songs that some kind software had sent to my pc through a peer to peer network, very good of them actually.
I also downloaded winamp as a result of these forums and am very pleased with that.

So, I now had about 1000 songs ripped and now had to come up with a plan to get my ipod early. It is my girlfriends birthday at the end of august (she will be 30) and so I decided that I would buy her an early present and perhaps then she would be benevolent and give me the ipod. I bought here a PS2 and wrapped it up and unvelied it this morning and lo and behold it worked. While she was setting up the PS2, she gave me the ipod and I sat eagerly at the computer desk and opened it.

It is true what everyone says, when you first open it, you notice very attention to detail from Apple. The gatefold box opens and you flip the inside cover and there it is. It seems even smaller than I remembered, even though I had gazed at many in the shops. It even distracted my girlfriend from the PS2 and she could not believe the size.

I lifted it out and believe it or not, it turned on by itself and already had a fulll charge.

I unpacked everything and laid it out. The dock was as perfect as the ipod, and the wires and even the plug mount had a certain style.

I had already bought a few extras in the states, such as the travel adaptors (so it would work in Hong Kong) and the USB cable.

I set it all up next to the computer, plugged in the USB cable and fired up the computer. I put the CD in and loaded everything except MMJB.

I then opened ephpod (which I had downloaded following advice received here) and the ipod was recognised. I decided to download 1 album as a sort of christening and chose the bends by Radiohead. It worked perfectly. I then unhooked the ipod and listened to the first songs. I already had the sony MDR71's and the sound was perfect, and the volume was at the correct setting meaning I did not have to increase the volume much past halfway.

So, I was no ready to download the rest of the 100 songs I had ripped. Here is where the problems started (but I think as a result of my stupidity). When I redocked the ipod it would not be recognised by the computer. I tried everything, unplugging the usb cable, restarting the computer...nothing. In the end, i relooaded the software from the disk and it then recognised it, but of course there were no songs on it.

I then remembered that you should unmount the ipod before removing it from the docking station, so the problem was my doing.

I was now ready to go again. I highlighted the 1000 or so songs and downloaded to the ipod. It took about 11 minutes, awesome stuff.

I then unmounted it using the ipod manager icon and removed it. All the songs were there and played perfectly. Now I tried to remount it and it worked perfectly this time.

yahooo...what a relief

I am now ripping more cd's and listening to the ipod while I am doing it.

Perfect present.......gadget..........music machine

I cannot wait till it is full and I still cannot comprehend how much music I will be carrying around with me.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me have an almost perfect experience with my ipod.

I will still keep viewing here to keep up with the latest info.

NOW THE STORY IS......

Thought I would update.

I have now changed the software I am using to MC9 (beta version 9.1) followiing a good read of all the threads. Cannnot recommend it enough.

It rips brilliantly...I set the ripping to MP3 VBR and set it to custom and removed the fast setting. It takes about 25 minutes to rip a cd, but it is worth it.

I have also used the volume analyser. This took a long while to analyse 1200 songs (so far) but I left it going through the night.

I then re-synched it and now the volume is perfect and I never have to alter the volume button.

I also bought a set of the new creative speakers to have the ipod in the bedroom along with a new dock and charging adaptor. The speakers are excellent (see them on the main ipod page in news)

I also bought the 3 iskin pack, which looks very cool.

I have also gone a re-bought some albums that I had on original tape or the cd has been scratched or lost and last night came back with about 40 albums (lucky HMV Hong kong had a sale on)
I am now ripping these.

I really think that having the ipod will encourage me to buy more CD's and I am also finding I am listening to songs I have not heard for years.

Anyway, I think I am now settled with MC9 doing everything for me.

Only small problem seems to be that the alarm will only play playlists by MMJB, which is a pain but it seems I have to live with it unless anyone knows of a solution

UPDATE AGAIN

Hi all, just letting you know the continuing story:

Have now got about 7gb of music on the ipod and am updating MC9.1 as more releases come.

Smartlists are awesome.

I do have to admit, that perhaps my girlfriend has got one over on me, because not only did I get her the PS2 so that I could get my ipod earlier than my birthday, but she has dropped so many hints that at lunchtime today, I went to the apple shop and bought her a 15gb (which will be a complete surprise for her bday, which is tomorrow....29+1)

And they had some new accessories in so I bought the battery pack for her as I know she will not remember to charge it up regularly and another power adaptor for my second dock, because I am getting tired of moving the one I have between the 2.

Keep ipoding, one and all, but this is not a cheap pastime by any means...

Cheers,

Paul

Very nice story paul. But if I can make one suggestion, use MMJB. I know that a lot of people loathe music match and say its "crap" software. But it isnt. I know you've been using winamp, and while that works, it is not nearly as powerful as music match jukebox plus is. In your first post you wrote that you downloaded ephpod to transfer your songs, winamp to play them,id3 tagit to tag it, and cdex to rip them on to your computer. If you installed MMJB+ you would have been able to do all of this a lot faster. Especially the tagging. With the "super tagging" feature, you just click on the song, or even your whole library and it will scan the MMJB database and repair all of the broken or incomplete tags and esupply you with the band's album art! Its easier create playlists, volume editting and ripping and burning cds is very fast. Also, with jukebox plus you get MMJB radio which lets you hear cd quality music for free of the artists of your choice and will play songs that will relate to your personal tastes.

I know someone will reply to my post to tell you to forger all what i just said, and that MMJB+ is crap. But tell me this, if apple shipped their $400 mp3 player with this software, and if MMJB+ was rated the best, easiest and most powerful media player on the PC market, can it really be that bad?

Maybe those of you who snob MMJB just don't know how to use it? And its a shame when you open the ipod and go straight to ephpod, theres a reason why MMJB is there.

I agree with you about MMJB in all its functionality except syncing. I use it for all my tag and song management, even for playing music on the PC. I don't use it for syncing because it was a bit slow and unreliable. Having said that Ephpod though fast is unreliable too so I now find myself using vPod for syncing.

Thanks for the comments Guys.

However, I had already been using MMJB with my previous nike player and I did not like it.

I now use MC9.1 and it does everything you have said, plus some with the smartlists.

I agree that people can use MMJB and it all comes down to personal preference.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi all,

One last update...

My girlfriend opened the ipod last night and there was the same stunned look as when I opened mine a few weeks ago. Even though she had watched me unpack mine, there was still a sense of wonder in actually now doing this for herself and you would never have guessed that she had seen one before.

I can now definitively confirm one thing, that some have bluelights and some do not. As she opened hers, we both expected the blue light, but none to be seen, only white...I thought she may be a little dissapointed but she thought it was kind of cool that it was different to mine and therefore we would not get them mixed up.

She unpacked the rest of the items and then we loaded it into my dock on the computer. Everything then went automatic and she formatted it for windows. She then opened up MC9 and was able to download all of my music from my library and then switched to her library and started to rip some of her own CD's. Everything went like a dream.

She may be a bit late into the office this morning (yes, we work together) as I am sure she was up all night ripping her CD's.

Result

Apple 10 - Rest of the world 0

Cheers,

Paul

i thought about the first album as the christening. i like your choice. radiohead, nice.

but myn will be the beatles; abbey road. i was thinking about revolver too, i pondered hendrix- are you experienced too

# 11 Re: At last she gives it to me...
as far as mmjb goes, there are better tools for ripping (eac/lame), mp3releaser for tagging, and winamp has some kickass plugins for sound. mmjb sucks imo.

# 12 Re: At last she gives it to me...
blah, another thing, similar to your story...

my folks bought me decks once for christmas. they bought like a month before, i couldnt restrain myself. so when they went out i carefully unpackaged them and mixed some stuff, then id carefully repackage and they'd be none the wiser. this went on for a while, so the look on my face on christmas day was one of relief not the (fake) initial Whoa! sometimes if they came home early id #### myself and hide the unpackaged deck, with the box empty, then replace it later.

restraining yourself isnt easy ;)

Paul firstly totally wonderful story, but i have a complaint. Why stop now with one last update. It is almost as if you are ashamed to be writing what you did.I almost ignored other peoples posts (sorry folks) to see the next post from you.Read all about your girlfriend and everything else and though wow excellent. So one month on how are things going and are you still buying more stuff
Is she forgetting to charge it or is she becoming more disciplined
