My addictive money pit
After several months of tossing it around, I decided to take the leap and pick up an Ipod. The cassette deck in my car had just died and I was tossing around getting a new stereo with CD player. I figured for the cost of a new deck, I could get an Ipod instead and carry my entire music collection instead of a few CDs. This is how I justified the purchase to myself anyhow.
So I went out and bought a 10Gb 3G at Best Buy. I didn't think I had too many CD's- 10Gb should be enough. I also didn't care for the extras like the dock or remote. Just something basic is all I wanted. Toss in a FM transmitter so I could listen in the car and I'm out for about $320.
I get my new toy home and am immediately stuck by how sweet she looks (my Pod's a she). Load up all my MP3's and I'm ready to go. Of course the Pod is too nice just to toss into my bag or leave on the car seat. 'She' might get scratched. So it's off to the store to pick up a case. Another $30 gets dropped. Of course, I have computers at work and home but only one sync cable. Just for efficiency sake, I should pick up an extra. Say bye-bye to another $20. It takes me a week to realize (thanks to IpodLounge) that there are many other more stylish case options I never new about. $30 more gone. Gotta keep the first case in case I change my mind and want to go back. That should do it. What more could I need?
I went to Best Buy again a week later looking for a TV remote. Wandered past the MP3 section and saw that they had a 15GB open box for $360. Why that's only $80 more than I paid for the 10Gb. My 10Gb is working great, but I only have 3Gb left free on it. What if some relation passed away and left me their CD collection? How would it all fit into 3GB? Now, if I had 8 more Gb, I could probably make due. I mean, their bound to have some of the same albums I already have. I wouldn't have to convert their entire collection. 8 addition Gb should just be enough. The 10gigger goes back and the 15 comes home. It's only $80 more right? I can make that up by selling the dock and remote. I'll keep the case, I already have two, but can you really have too many cases?
I get Lola (my new 15gigger is named Lola) home and load up all my music. She sure looks great. But she looks a bit undignified lying on the table as she loads. Maybe I should give the dock a try. It's bound to look classier. I should also pick up a second dock for work. Don't want to look like a barbarian their in front of all my coworkers. I mean, it's only another $40 right?I should give that remote a whirl when I get time too...
When is it going to stop? My very basic 'just what is necessary' purchase has ballooned out of control. Lola's going to get spoiled. Of course, if I take care of her, she'll take care of me. I'll need the care too. Once my wife sees the American Express bill, Lola may be the only 'female' companionship I get for a long time. At least she can play the blues...

lol, it is very addictive isn't it, but its worth it. enjoy the ipod and good luck with the explaining ;)
# 2 Re: My addictive money pit
Yes the iPod is a very expensive friend. I recieved mine as a gift and currently don't have a job so I didn't have to pay for the actual device. Still, I needed a firewire card ($50), aux adapter for my car ($85), car adapter ($40), case ($30), cables etc. ($30). Not to mention more CDs to give to her!

BigIzz has a great point. After buying my Ipod, i realized that most of my downloaded mp3s (from Kazaa) are utterly crap compared to stuff i can rip on my own. Most of the stuff floating around on the "net" are ripped really bad.
The recording industry shouldn't fear the iPod. If anything...it has made me buy more CDs in the past few weeks than i had ever bought in the last 3 years. The quality i'm getting by ripping my own stuff is much better than downloading the crap on the internet.
Mike, I'm with you. The iPod is a very expensive and high maintanance item. Mostly...it's our fault :) THe thing is soooo #### attractive and convient, yet it is worth EVERY penny. I can't imagine my musical life without it now. One can't help but buy other "things" to complement the iPod.
All in all...this thing is fun.
# 4 Re: My addictive money pit
ive spent money on the ipod, car aux cable, car charger cable, iskin exo (twice), and the DLO jam jacket. Lots of money to this thing..im gonna buy the 30gb model when i fill up the 10gigger maybe by then the price will have gone down.
# 5 Re: My addictive money pit
Hah, amateurs ;)
Recently I've taken to sticking my ATH-W2002 headphones ($800) into my iPod at home when I'm stationary. It's quicker than starting Musicmatch or Foobar on whatever PC I'm sitting at and switching outputs on the distribution console.

# 8 Re: My addictive money pit
Lots of people give their iPod a name... Mine's Lucille, and she's cheating on me with my best friend... Lol. Everyone at school loves her... as soon as I get it out, there's a group of people around me going either "Hey, what's that?" or "Is that one of those music things?"
But I love her...
As for my total...
5gb iPod...$300
XtremeMac Case... $40
Speakers so I don't have to use the headphones in my room... $50
Plastic stickers cause I though the case made her ugly... $8
Wireless remote (coming tomorrow! :D ).... $50
and I'll get an iTrip sometime... $30
That's like $478...!
But having Lucille... PRICELESS!

why does everyone hate bose ? I have had nothing but good experiences with them... but my tastes do differ from others. and I hate how D.amN. is a #### word.

# 12 Re: My addictive money pit
bose was quite cool when they first came out with their cube surround sound speakers. but now they just think they'r 4" woofers sounds better then other people's 6" woofers because they have better design.
the truth is. bose is wayyy over priced... in your case, the bose quiet comfort, they would be a good deal at around $90-120, but no where near $300. for $300 you should defently try some sony mdr-cd3000, which sounds at least 10 times more musical then quite confert.
im not trying to make you feel like you been ripped of. just that everyone these days thinks bose IS the name of audio. truth is, bose is far from the musical standerd
# 13 Re: My addictive money pit
Well after getting my iPod I bought an iMac which set me back $2800...I think I beat all of you out!
# 14 Re: My addictive money pit
I recently received a 10gb G3 as a gift. Always wanted one, especially after the new style was released, but just too much to spend on my own. But I decided to use the gift receipt and throw in $100 for the upgrade to 15gb, since I wanted the dock & case. And the extra space isn't bad either.
So far I've only had to buy a firewire card ($16) since I have a PC. I've pre-ordered the iTrip, but it's not in yet. I'm also thinking about an iSkin.
Oh yeah, I also bought a new 120gb HD to store all my new MP3s.
# 15 Re: My addictive money pit
Heres my list:
-$300 for iPod 10GB G3
-$20 for iPod Jam Jacket 3g
-$JVC Deck with front MP3 port- #250
-Radioshack stereo cable-$5
-Belkin Auto Adapter-$40
All in all:
About $615
expensive, but #### WORTH IT!!!

If you thought about this profinger you'd realise that the Bose is a noise-cancelling semi-portable. You must also be familiar with the dimensions and isolation of the CD3000. And you've never tried a Quietcomfort have you? I hate seeing my pet hate (disparaging/recommending without usage) on Head-Fi. I REALLY hate seeing it on other boards.
# 17 Re: My addictive money pit
o yes i heard of quite confert as long as other line of bose headphones (triport)
they sound quite good except i dont thin i would ever pay their retail price.
the thing i hate the most about them is that they "eat-up" equalizers.
try pluging them into a source and listen to them with different equalizer settings, unplug them and do the samething with other headphones in the same price range (or even lower price range). you will notice the equalizer setting barely changes bose's sound.
THAT my friend bothers me the most:)

Just a little off topic but...
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who has tried it... but what i did was cover (most) of the backside of my ipod and the entire screen area with WriteRight screen protectors. I'm using the ones designed for the Sony Clie NR60/70 because the LCDs on those models are longer than the average PDA.
I've had my Ipod for over a month now and there are no scratches on the backside. There are a few scratches on the front, but only on the places that are not covered by the screen protectors. Most of the area are the funtional buttons anyway...so they are bound to have some normal wear anyway.
I will feel better about taking my iPod everywhere when i get my hands on the new iSkin exo.
...back on topic... i'm going CD crazy at my local Tower Records. I need more money.
# 21 Re: My addictive money pit
Lets See. . .
15GB iPod = $400
iSkin eXo(Carribean Blue) = $35
Cassette Adapter = $20 ( I got ripped off)
Belkin Auto Charger = $30
That adds up to a grand total of . . $485
Every penny worth it!
# 22 Re: My addictive money pit
Well first I purchased my ipod because my rio S35 just couldnt keep up for 8 hours of work. Great mp3 gym player though. Anyway I got the 15gb 3g. So 400 gone. Then I need a case. Two actually. Iskin for walkin around and the Maynare sports convertible for the gym. So there goes 70 bucks. Then I read about hooking the ipod up to the car. I had planned on getting the itrip when it came for the 3g models but when I heard the sound quality through the docking station, I said NO WAY.
So I needed the belkin, 40 more. The whole purpose of the ipod though was so I wouldnt have to go buy a in dash mp3 player. However no way was I gonna pay 80 bucks for a cd changer converter so I can listen to the music on my stock player. So I check out the players and realise I might as well get something decent. Then I see models that play videos. So I get a sony xplod 850(dont flame me, thier not that bad).
Then I see for 40 more bucks I can get it with mp3 playback. So I got it. 252 bucks. Then I need the wireless remote. 10 more. Then I need the harness. 10 more. Then I need a cradle, 18 at Radio shack. Then I need the line modulator. Another 15 at Radio Shack. Then I need some monster cables which add 20.
So far my little friend has cost me
400 - Ipod 3g
30 - Iskin
40 - Sport convertable case.
40 - Belkin adapter
252 - Mp3 cd reciever
10 - Harness
18 - Cradle
15 - Line modulator
20 - Monster cable.
My Ipod blastin tunes through my new reciever via the belkin adapter? Priceless.

Priceless. Yup! Out for a walk on a lovely summer evening with my favorite tunes streaming into my ears. Yes!
But to stay with the money pit theme...I've always gotten by on hand-me-down computers. Always said, "All I want to do is email and word-processing. What do I need a fancy computer for?" I got my latest hand-me-down so that my son could play cooler games. Thought it was a little silly.
Then my big brother got me an iPod. I tell you I didn't know what an mp3 was 3 months ago. Now I'm ripping cds, hanging out here, and dreaming of bigger hard drives, MC9...and that's not to mention headphones, auto kits and all the other accessories.
That little device has really started something!
