I returned my 2nd gen ipod to compusa under tap and got a 3rd gen replacement, but I forgot to give back the cable that connects from the ipod to the wall to charge and the firewire connector to the computer. I also have headphones that are broken (only work in one ear), but could be easily returned to apple for brand new ones (they are under warranty- I'll return them to apple for a fee or you can just do it yourself if your ipod is under warranty).
