Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
If anyone is able to provide me with drivers that will make the new 3G iPod to be recognized as a drive (with drive letter) in Win98 SE (with USB 1.1 only) then I will give $5 reward.
Note: There is a link to some kind of sample code for writing drivers for USB Mass storage devices on the Micro-soft web site when you do a search for "USB Mass Storage driver" in the Win98 support section. If I was a Windows programmer I would have modified and compiled these myself; however I dont do Windows. So if you know windows programming and have a MSVC++ or such compiler for windows, it should be fairly easy to get this working. The reward is not much, but you can have your name on the driver.

# 2 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Thanks. I'm going to test this out today at home and if it works, I WILL send you payment thru paypal.
I keep my word.
P.S: At first sight it looks like you have sent me a link to the firewire driver for win98; however you know better...it probably is the USB1.1 Mass storage driver too...I'll report back after I test. Thanks.

# 3 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Oops That did not even install. I get the message" This software is not intended for your version of windows".
More precisely, the link that you provided is a link to the firewire update for Win98 and not Win98 SE which is what I have.
So I will keep waiting for someone to write the Win98SE mass storage driver for Win98SE/USB 1.1 and then they can claim the $5 prize.

# 11 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
ipod do not and will not work in windows 98 first edition
# 12 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
1- pixel- now i get it, hehe, im so ######ed sometimes...
2- sexy- the iPOD WILL work with 98 FE, as i have made one do it with a little ingenuity and an edited driver set. So, unless i mistake your intentions (like i did for pixel), i would have to say you are wrong on this one. BTW on a side note, i have had 1 ipod work on a windows 95 machine with a firewire card and edited driver set. So the 98SE requirement is only because it is the only way it stays p&p.
I have never made it work with USB on either of the above operating systems, although it is blatently easy to do (never had the opportunity).
... i wonder if i could get it to work with MSDOS 2.2...
# 13 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
why dont u buy a firewire card for your pc? it costs me $30 CDN which is *like $24 US. If u dont have an open pci slot then take out your 56k modem... i assume you're not using dialup... eek!
# 14 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Jeez dude, the idea is not to just get the iPod working.
I have done that and done that with several Win2K PCs as well as with firewire cards. The idea is to get it working on all of my PCs without having to do any hardware changes. That is the *CHALLENGE*. Do you understand ?
If that can be done then, after that I might just buy a firewire card. If I buy a firewire card now there is no challenge.
Simply put, it is a well known *technical fact* that the iPod *can* work with all editions of Win 98 (and even Win95 as the previousposter has said). For some obscure reason Apple has not chosen to do this - maybe they did not feel it is important, maybe they felt that if they did that not enuf people would buy Macs, maybe they felt that is was just not worth the effort. Well heres what I have to say: The iPod will probably sell more copies if only they had spent that extra effort of coming out with the driver.
Its very very possible. So thats why I want to do it. Or because of limited time, I am requesting other programmers to take up the challenge.

u must have a lot of time on your hands.
# 16 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
The reason apple doesnt support earlier than 98se is because they do not wish to include a driver cd, simple as that. they would rather just depend on MS having hte drivers included with the OS. (and MM has trouble with 95 and early versions of 98).
Basically, 95,98,98se,and ME(not as much so as the others) are all the same kernel code, so it is easily possible to get one to work for any of the OS's as long as it works with the others.
BTW, did anyone else notice when 98 came out that the only difference was that it was a pack of drivers?
# 17 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Hi guys!
I grabbed the driver from the site ( http://www.sonnettech.com/downloads...storage_sw.html ), which appears to be listed as a driver for a Picallo(sp?). I couldn't convince Windows 98SE to use it as the driver for my iPOD. It does see the .INF, but doesn't think that it's for an iPOD. It complains that it wasn't "able to locate a driver for this device".
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Craig.
[Just trying to get my new iPOD working... I borrowed a friend's XP machine to get some tunes on it.]
# 18 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Find the name of the file that it is looking for, and jsut rename the thing to that value.
# 19 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Time to bring this thread back from the dead. Hopefully.
I'm trying to get my iPod to work in Win98 (not SE) with USB1.1, simply for storage purposes on an extra computer. (I use XP and iTunes for music transfers.) I don't need to use any music management software, but simply would like the iPod to show up as another storage drive.
My question is this: What should I rename the USB mass storage device driver to inorder for the iPod to accept it? As in if I DL the sonnettech driver listed above, what is the exact filename that I should rename the .inf file to so my iPod will be able to use it?
TIA,
Erik

# 20 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
It sounds like ALOT of people are suffering with this. Could somone please post the .inf file somewhere so we can download it and start using our ipods on Win 98 SE machines.
I have a 2000 machine at work (the ipod is of course fine there) - but I have a 98SE machine at home. I also don't have firewire, so I'm trying to do this through USB (as the originator of this post is as well).
- I've tried the 2.01 loader trick and that doesn't work (it goes to a different screen than the trick-finder shows- maybe there are multiple versions of 2.01? :-) )
- I've grabbed the piccolo driver and that doesn't work either and we can't name it "what it's asking for" because the system isn't telling us what it's looking for
- I've scoured every driver site I could find - no dice
Surely someone out there has the .inf file(s) we need and could post them. If you did, you would have my gratefulness and you might just help one person become an Ipod fan...right now I'm not so happy with it:
- freaking awful belkin FM transmitter (returned)
- no usb cable in box, 3 trips to store to figure out which route to go
- now doesn't work on home machine
- no reasonable in-car solution that doesn't require mega-bucks or lots of work
- can't plug-n-play very easily on others machines, cutting down on portable storage device value
...but other than that it's lovely :-)
erggggg - i went with the ipod because i figured the interface / ease of use would be so much better than the competition, that it would be a dream to use...not there yet, is it. Not that anyone else is either, but I'm definitely disappointed.
I think I'm going to keep it, I'm only in day 6 of ownership, but I've been back and forth several times.
I bet it's slick for a Mac though, huh?
Alas, thanks for the venting space and if anyone can help with the driver many of us will bless you and your children and your children's children.

If someone will email me the file or a link to download it I will post it to my file server. I am always happy to help the less unfortunate that can't be blessed with a Mac.
# 23 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
By the way, the reason they don't include the driver or make one readily available for older Windows versions is because then they don't have to offer tech support for it. Until Windows 98SE the OS wasn't meant to be used with USB or firewire. The conflicts and issues that would come from adding official support to a system that wasn't meant to have that capability wouldn't be Apple's responsibility yet every iPod user with an old Windows machine would be calling them.
# 24 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Thank you MacTraderBoy - I appreciate your willingness to help us PC-ers.
It has become apparent in my 2 weeks with the iPod that it clearly was intended to work much better with a Mac.
But hopefully the beauty and ingenuity of the iPod can allow us to bridge the borders between these two warring tribes and allow everyone to unite behind this little lovely white fella...
Of course some smart techno-person needs to step forward with that driver...
Anyone...
Look I'll put up $5 too...that's $10, but more importantly think of the fame, the adulation, the weeping babies who will sleep soundly while their parents' iPod plays softly in the background...
# 25 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
Ok, I will help you guys. If I understand correctly you need an app that allows you to connect Gen 1/2 iPods to older versions of Windows? If that isn't correct someone explain exactly what you need this driver to do.
Here are two links with software that may help. If they do let me know and I will add them to my site so if the developer dissapears we will still have them.

# 26 Re: Offer: $5 for Win98SE/USB1.1 drivers for 3G iPod
And here is another one. The first version says it will work with 95/98 and then the author removed that support because he started using unicode. After speaking with him he said he had to do it to support international users and that there wasn't enough reason to support two versions.
On his site he says that if there is enough need for software that works with older WinBoxes he will make it. Soooooooo everyone email him and ask.
