best speaker system for medium to large sized bedroom..
I'm planning on getting my younger brother a set of speakers for his bedroom, for Christmas.. I would like for the speakers to be capable of hooking up to his Ipod, his record player, and cd player.. does anyone have any suggestions on what the best setup for this would be??.. I was thinking maybe a set of 2.1 powered speakers like the JBL creatures or perhaps the Monsoon flatpanel model.. I'm not sure how any of these sound or how I would connect these to his goodies, especially the Ipod.. any input would be appreciated, thanks

Depends on what his setup is--I mean, what's the record player and CD player connected to now? Directly to speakers (weird) or to an amp/receiver?
EDIT: Oh, and what's your budget? That matters a lot, too.

well.. he has a jvc minisystem right now.. it's an old one that I gave him, 3 cd changer, 66watts.. his record player is also an old one which is powered off of its own built-in speaker.. I was thinking on buying him a new record player, and let him hook that, his discman, and his ipod up to the new speakers, if at all possible.. ehh, I was thinking in the range of say, $100-$300.. nothin too special, he's no audiophile.. but I would appreciate any suggestions..thanks

The model of "hook things up directly to speakers" is relatively recent and somewhat odd. Any separate turntable (err, record player) that you'd buy would expect to be connected to some kind of amplifier. If the JVC mini system has an aux input, he could hook it directly to that, but only if the turntable had "line-level" outputs (in the olden days, they didn't and you needed either a preamp/receiver with phono inputs or a phono preamp, but now many turntables have line-level outs).
Products like the JBL creatures (which I'd avoid) and the Monsoons (which are much better) are designed to take a headphone out (like the iPod or portable CD player), but not an unamped line-level source like a true piece of component audio like a CD deck or turntable. So you have some connectivity issues. You'll need to work that out first.

you can get an AMAZING system for cheap bro.
get a yamaha or technic amp.
i suggest you get two 60 watt speakers for the bass, and put one on each channel ( 1right, 1 left ). Then get the studio speakers, they're quite small, the size of the iPod box. They have decent bass, and they fill in the rest of the notes. Put on each channel.
I know im a bit vague, but it leaves the options opened.
U need atleast 60watt capable speakers for good bass.

get a receiver, all you would need to hook up the ipod is a headphone to rca cable(like $5 at radioshack), and most turntables will be rca output to begin with. then just get a pair of speakers for it.
