Is a nose useful to a dog?
Sorry, didn't mean to be a smarta$$:D
I have external speakers (Sony SRS-Z1) and I think they complement the ipod greatly. I can listen to my music at work where the ety's I use are probably a no-no...
You can take them to trips too.
And if you don't like them, hey it's not like you've spent a fortune. Good ones go for $200 max.
I say go for it!

I use a litttle non-powered pair from kenwood, model s-505 that came with a cassette player that I bought back in 1987. They preform great at work. I also use the sony srs t55's when travelling.

The ipod is basically just a transport when hooked up to an external amp and speakers. It is surprisingly transparent and neutral. I have played mine through small bookshelf monitors, as well as $3600.00 amps and $2000.00 tower speakers. It is close to the Redbook CD quality provided by my Sony ES player.

Since I cannot attach my Apple Pro speakers with iSub, I like to attach either my surround sound Altec Lansing speakers with subwoofer, or my Altec Lansing speakers that came with my new Dell. I find that I can concentrate more when I listen to music from speakers rather than from headphones. When I have a party, I use my iPod hooked up to my Fender Passport PA, with 4x400 watt speakers on tripods.

I have a purpose for using speakers, but other people are different, and may not like speakers... Your preference I guess

WOW, rt297 that's quite a statement you made here!
The iPod is good, but it's not THAT good as a source. Plus, since the MP3 format is lossy, it is NEAR CD quality at best.
I have also hooked it up to my Golden Tube Audio SE-40 poer amp and my B&W 805 Matrix xpeakers and the result was good, I 'll grant you that. But when I use my Sony ES 7 as the source and a real CD instead of MP3's ripped at 192, the result is noticeably better. If it wasn't, why would anyone in their right mind pay top dollar to get something like the ES 7, or even better sources (777, Wadia etc)?

The Tivoli PAL is a great little portable speaker for about $130. Wonderful sound, great rechargable battery life, built for easy carrying, and has an Aux-In in addition to the AM/FM. No tape or CD built in, which cuts down the size.
