How do I hook iPod to my Stereo?
Hi, does anyone know how I can connect my iPod to my stereo thru the headphone jack? I bought a stereo audio cable but it doesn't work or either I don't know how to use it. Please reply if you have any tips. Thanks! :)

the headphone jack only sends music out, not in from an ipod or anything.
look for an audio in port if you have it... otherwise, you're out of luck unless the stereo has a radio tuner and you have an itrip or some other transmitter

what does an audio in port look like?

it should just be a black port that says audio in somewhere close to it.

OK, I'm guessing that you have one of the cords that goes from the stereo-mini jack to 2 RCA jacks that go into the back of your stereo.
Just plug the mini-jack into your iPod's headphone jack, and the RCA jacks into your stereo's inputs. Anything'll work, such as a CD, Video, Aux or DVD input. Heck even a Tape input'll work.
Whatever's on the back of your stereo...

One thing I wish to add to Adam's explanation is that you will also need to turn up the volume on your iPod to 90% to 100% in order to get decent sound out of it and into your stereo. The headphone jack is not quite the same as a standard line-out jack and requires high volume level in this case.
Don't forget to turn it back down when you go back to using headphones too
Also, if you don't want to break the bank on a RCA-Mini audio cable, I highly recommend the Acoustic Research model AP042 available from www.bestbuy.com for $12.99. It beats cheapo radioshack cables as well as overpriced monster iCable in terms of sound and bang for the buck.

What kind of stereo do you have? It would make it soo much easier... There are many ways of hooking up an accessory to a stereo... You can put it in the line in (most common), the karaoke (it works... not that great tho), the video in (on some types... mine works amazingly well), and last but not least (maybe in sound quality), the fm tuner...
Tell me what type of stereo you have, and i'll tell you where to plug the iPod. Also, try to get the shortest cable possible... Just like power cables, and network cable, the power is significantly reduced the longer the cable is... Unless you get a top-of-the-line cable, stick with the shortest one that still works for your needs

Apple recommends turning it up only half way on the iPOD for optimal sound. Just blast the amp/tuner up and leave the iPOD volume about half, it should sound like a dream :)

thanks to everyone for helping. to clarify things, my stereo does not have an audio port. all i see is a place to connect the speakers. wires connect to the stereo from the speakers, not plugs. so theres no extra ports or anything. hope this isn't too confusing.

Just to elaborate on this a little. If any one has a pre-amp or receiver with phono (i.e., turntable) input jacks (hey, some still do! ;)), that will not work! Phono inputs are much, much more sensitive than other inputs - you could damage your speakers if you connect something other than a turntable to phono jacks, particularly if it is an iPod with the volume turned up.
Otherwise, Adam is correct - any other input will work fine. I use "MD" (Mini Disc) on my Yamaha receiver. On pre-amps and receivers, the other analog, non-phono jacks are all the same - the only difference is how they are labeled.
(Sorry, Adam, but I just wanted to clarify what you said and maybe save someone blasted eardrums (at a minimum) and / or damaged speakers! ;))

Well, then grover, with no input jacks, your only option is an FM transmitter like the iTrip (assuming you have an FM tuner on your stereo).

Yeah Tom, I thought about adding that. I thought that I was probably the only one here that still has a stereo w/phono inputs.
Just tossed my turntable a few days ago...brought a tear to my eye. ;)

Adam,
You tossed your turntable!! Don't you know the sound from vinyl is just sooooooo much warmer than that sterile digital stuff!
I still have LP's and just could not chuck my deck - there is something so soothing about wiping dust from records...! ;)

I agree that vinyl sounds much better. I currently have my Pioneer turntable plugged up to a small preamp and mixer setup and then fed into the RCA inputs of a PM7600. I've been experimenting with recording my vinyl as MP3's so I can listen to them on my iPod. Instead of speakers, I generally have a pair of monitor headphones plugged up to the output from the 7600. I also have a friend who is a long-time DJ and has an extensive vinyl collection and he's constantly recording selections to CD, though his setup is Windows-based.

I still have my nice, linear tone arm Sony turntable. Although I haven't hooked it up in years (no room for it in my entertainment center), I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I still have all my old LPs, too.
One day, i'll hook it up. My Yamaha receiver has phono inputs, and it is only a few years old.

Ah yes Tom and Bob, I do know the joys of cleaning vinyl. But alas, I too kept saying "someday" and eventually the wife just said "Someday has passed, now get rid of it!" ;)
Believe it or not I tossed albums too!
It's a crying shame and I still am sad about it... :(

I guess this seems like a good place to ask about this..
I have an old, old bookshelf system that doesn't have an audio in port. The speakers are connected using speaker wire. Do you guys think there any way I can hook up my ipod to it? Maybe by using some adapters or something (I'm totally clueless when it comes to this stuff).
The closet thing I've seen to what I need would be the pro Speaker breakout cable (from griffin technology), but it only works with the pro Speaker jack on the iMac.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 1st gen iPod 10 GB for Mac. My stereo is a Harmon Kardon AVR5 pro-logic. I use Monster iCable 7 ft. So, I plus the iPod into my stereo using the cable. It works through Phono but it sounds terrible, all sorts of cracks. None of the other inputs work, not CD, tape or video.
Any suggestions on why the other inputs don't work?
Any suggetions on why it sounds so terrible thru Phono?
Thanks.

My stereo doesn't have a line in either and I was wondering if it was actually worth spending the money on an FM Transmitter. How is the sound quality?
I'd really like to be able to listen to it at home.

I bought an iRock transmitter some time ago, intending to use it in the car. It doesn't work at all well in the car, but it's really good in my apartment. If you have an FM aerial from the radio on your Hi-Fi it will work fine. I can hook the iRock up to any device and it will transmit to any radio I put on in any room of the apartment - great if you're doing a bit of tidying up around the place or have a party and want the music in every room.
