Hi folks -- I'm planning on archiving my entire CD collection (about 1,500 CDs) on a 250GB external hard drive and I read somewhere that FLAC is a good way to go since it is easily convertible to MP-3 or (hopefully) other new formats that may emerge in the future. Is this true? Any advice, guida...

What kind of affect does the bitrate or filesize have on the battery length of an ipod. How much quicker does the battery die if the files are encoded at 192 as apposed to 160 or 128. Is it even noticeable?

Compilation is very useful thing to organize music, and I use it a lot for AAC files, owever I can't find a field corresponding to compilation in MP3 ID3 tags, any help?
I will be buying a 10gb iPod later this year, and will be encoding my files in LAME. Because I have heared some negative reviews of the iPod earphones, what is the best bitrate to use?
So I have purcahsed some music from the itunes store....how do I rip it so that I can play it on my cd player in my car......used to be no problem with mp3.....so how do I convert acc to mp3......I burned a cd and tried to import it back as mp3....but I got a message saying that I cannot do this.......
This is porbably the first of many...Seems like ever since I downloaded Quicktime, I now can't download MP3's. I'm talking legal MP3's, the sample songs that bands and labels have on their sites. I click the download link, and instead of getting that window that shows the progr...

I am new to the world of mp3 music. I recently bought a 30g iPod and am planning to save my music to AAC with iTunes. I ripped a couple CDs with EAC to WAV and converted them to 128kps AAC with iTunes but to simplify things I was thinking about ripping straight from the CD with iTunes. Is there any...
So, i did at test the other day. I tried to convert the same song (eminem feat dido - Stan) from wave with varius aac option. I used QT6.4 and nero's encoder. So with QT i made a 128kbps and a 160kbsp version of the song, and with nero i used the preset option extreme (upto 190kbps i think) a...

I posted this elsewhere... but perhaps I should have done it here:Newbie question follows...The music I download from iTunes can be played back on which PORTABLE player - iPod only, or are there other players that I can use to listen to downloaded music from iTunes? If the answer is iPod only, then t...
I'm bummed, bought a bunch of tunes off of MMJB and can't use them on iPod. Any options beside switching to itunes? I'm more in favor of staying with MMJB.

See the bottom of this post for appropriate links for programs.First and foremostSound is subjective, even more so than any other sense. The problem occurs when you can ?see? what you?re hearing, which introduces bias. Take this information with a grain of salt; I believe the best option is always w...
i've heard plenty of times that this is a BAD idea.. but i'm wondering how bad it would be to convert 320 kbs MP3 to 128 kbs MP4?
Now that I've joined the iPod family, I have a dilemma. My current music collection (all ripped from personal CDs) is strictly 128 kbps MP3. Alas, it won't all fit on my 40G iPod, as it's about 45 GB total. It will, however, fit if I re-rip to 96 kbps AAC. Since (I'm told) audio...
I'm sure this has been discussed before, so sorry if this question is so old. But I recently downloaded ITunes for Windows, and now I have the option of converting my mp3 files to AAC files. The only problem is, I have over 1500 mp3 files on my computer, so is it worth converting to AAC in orde...

Here is a great site that provides results of public listening tests of various compression technologies at various bitrates. 1. The first test compares AAC files @ 128 using different encoders. 2. The second takes the winning 128 AAC encoder and compares it to other common formats and encoders,...
Whats the difference between an MPEG audio file, MP3, or AAC? I know MP3's dont take up much space but thats about it.

Does anyone know of a serious comparison of AAC bitrate versus LAME --alt-preset standard MP3 encoding (i.e. in a blind test AAC at ? kbps cannot be destringuished from LAME APS)? I'd like to know what bitrate would give equivalent results so I can decide if it's worth ripping CD's to...
acc has better sound quality, but it takes up more space than mp3s, right?
Anybody know of a good p2p program for finding AAC files? After hearing AAC in comparison to my MP3 collection, and re-ripping most of my collection, I don't think I can go back to MP3. But on Kazaa and the like, EVERYTHING is MP3.

Hate to pass up a better format, BUT... Now that iTunes and AAC-ripping for Windows have finally come out, it's time to make a final decision about how to rip all my CDs. I have a fairly large collection (~1200 CDs), so frankly my #1 priority is to make sure I only ever have to do this once; I...

hmm i noticed maybe is just my ears that 128k music store aac's sound better than those encoded by itunes 4.1, they sound more like 160k, am i crazy or does someone agree with me.
Just wondering what 160kbps is equal to in mp3, roughly? Ive heard both 192 and 256. What do you guys think? Cheers
I need to convert WVA files in media player to MP3, so I can upload my Media Player Music File to my IPod. How do I do this? Is there software that I can use?
Im to lazy to rip my cd collection again, does anybody know in terms of percentage what the quality loss from converting from mp3 to aac using iTunes will be eg 5% loss of quality? Would it be better to convet it back to .wav and then to aac.

I just downloaded iTunes Windows the other day as soon as it came out, and promptly began ripping all my CDs into AAC and converting my existing MP3s. But now I am left w/ something of a dilemma. I will be getting an iPod soon, but I'd like to keep an archive of music on my computer rather than...
I've just subtracted a QT 6.4 224 kbit/s file from a QT 6.3 224 kbit/s file (both decoded with QT 6.4), and the resulting signal is not empty. See http://members.brabant.chello.nl/~m.heijligers/ipod/ for more details. My first impression is that the audible difference is not that large. I'...

Now I'm feeling pretty foolish, but what is the suggested (recommended) sampling rate for MP3 files -- 41 or 44khz?I know that 44 is the CD standard, but Cdex comes out of the box configured with 41 as the default and nowhere in my net searching can I find information on what rate to use for MP...

I've been using Winamp 5 and sometimes EAC/PsyTel to encode my CDs to AAC format.First, does anyone know what compressor Winamp 5 uses? I've heard bad things about FAAC, so hopefully it doesn't use that. Now I tried compressing my wav files to "AAC" using Quicktime Pro, as I've h...
Just got my ipod and i'm currently trying to download my music onto it but i've only managed to get about half of it on. I assume the reason for this is that i used windows media player to rip my CD's onto my computer and hence these files are wma ones. Is there anyway of changing the...

Hi all,As I rip and encode my tunes, I've been using VBR MP3 (high quality) - as per Adam Shawley's informative MC9 post in a different section. However, as I get to my Jazz (mostly bebop, post-bop, and cool) as well as the few but growing collection of classical discs, I wonder if anyone...
